River of Life Public Outreach Programme Phase 1
The River of Life Public Outreach Programme or ROLPOP was commissioned by the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) Malaysia for 3 years starting 2012. The Project site covers the 10km stretch of Klang River representing about 40.4 km2 catchment area (from Klang Gates Dam to the confluence of Sg. Klang and Sg. Ampang).
About 80% of the Project site lies within municipality area of Majlis Perbandaran Ampang Jaya (MPAJ) while the other 20% lies within the municipality area of Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur. The main tributaries of Sg. Klang within the Project site are Sg. Kemensah, Sg. Sering and Sg. Gisir. The population within the Project site is estimated to be about 146,000.
The Public Outreach Programme(POP) objectives are:
- Educating the public on common do’s and don’ts as well as other skills to preserve the rivers
- Promoting a sense of ownership towards the rivers
- Initiating long term and sustainable change in behaviour towards preserving the river.
Target Groups:
- The general public - all residents living or working in the project area
- Targeted local communities - mainly living in selected areas within about 300 meters of the river channel of Klang River and main tributaries
- Schools - in selected areas within about 300 meters of the river channel of Klang River and main tributaries
- Restaurants - commercial kitchen within the project area
- Industries - industries within the project area
Below are some of the activities carried out:
Project Outcome:
- 10,000 people from targeted project site has been reach out directly throughout the project 40,000 people of the public been exposed about the river related issues and BMP through education materials distribution, website, Facebook, visibility (print media/tv), scientific publication and word of mouth
- More than 10 events/programmes have been carried out. Some of the main activities are River hunt, river carnival, photo competition, roadshow, river adoption, gotong royong, SMART Ranger & RIVER Ranger initiatives, open classroom activities, etc
- 14 schools have established their SMART & RIVER Ranger programmes and conducting their respective initiatives/activities (minimum one) at their school level
- 20 commercial kitchens have been recruited into the DAPUR HIJAU programme. Some of the main activities are kitchen audit and training
- In total 4 km of river stretch of Klang River and 2 km of Kemensah River been adopted by 5 local communities and resident associations.
- More than 500 household has taken additional measures to reduce their waste/pollution. In average 200kg of used cooking oil have been collected monthly by the community
- Six of the targeted local community have established their own centre for used cooking oil collection, recycling, river information, river beautification, composting and recreational area which can be visited and observed. They are:

- PKNS Rumh Pangsa Tmn Keramat (Surau Madrasatul Islamiah)
- Ukay Perdana
- Sierra Ukay
