Trainings will be conducted focusing on identification, monitoring and enhancement of the river ecosystem and habitat at a common site.
This is followed by localised awareness programme/activities to supplement the proposed site initiatives which aims to create awareness and to engage the communities to be part of the initiatives.
The training will be specialized for:
TRAININGS CONDUCTED:
1. Two (2) days training for the local communities conducted at KEM ABC Janda Baik on 12 and 13 September 2020. Training was attended by 25 community representatives from 13 community groups within the Klang River basin.
2. Community based inventory workshop, Klang River Basin Bioblitz 2020 – FoKRB carried out concurrently at five (5) sites on 20 September 2020. The workshop was carried out a week after the centralized training for the communities at Janda Baik to ensure the trained communities can apply their knowledge and skill immediately at their localise sites. The sites were Taman Warisan, Taman Melawati, AU2 Taman Keramat, Stretch of Klang River - Midvalley and Taman Tugu Project – Nursery. All the sites are located within the Klang River Basin. The onsite workshop is aimed to train local communities/ public to learn how to identify and recognize localize riverine flora & fauna species via smartphones (using the iNaturalist) as well RIVER Ranger field guidebook
3. Dr. K. Kalithasan conducted a webinar workshop on Community’s Role on Biodiversity Monitoring on 24 February 2021. Fifty-eight (58) participants joined in for the two (2) hours talk and training workshop focusing on how communities can use the GEC’s existing Biodiversity Data Sheet to record the data and identify the species with the iNaturalist App
4. A City Nature Challenge 2021: Klang Valley activity conducted in collaboration with UM Water Warriors and Sekitar Kita from 30 April to 3 May 2021 to further enhance and promote participation of the communities to actively observe, record and identify the biodiversity within their riverine area or vicinity. The community briefing session on 17 April 2021 was attended by 24 representatives from more than 20 community groups. The City Nature Challenge 2021: Klang Valley required the participating citizens to document all type of biodiversity observed within their vicinity (their riverine area) into the iNaturalist app within the challenge period (30 Apr – 3 May 2021). In total, 35 FoKRB members from 12 locations (communities) along Klang River participated in the challenge.
5. A mini competition was also organised by GEC to engage more participation of the local communities. There were two (2) categories: Category 1 - local communities with highest participation and number of observation; and Category 2 - individuals (from participating communities) with highest number of observation. The list of winners for both competitions was shared with the communities in the focal community WhatsApp group and social media
6. On 4th March 2021, 8pm; webinar titled Nilai Kepelbagaian Biologi bagi Konservasi Sungai di Malaysia – Kepentingan kepada Komuniti Tempatan dan Persekitaran was conducted by Mr Quek Yew Aun from Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources (KeTSA). The talk emphasized on the importance of preserving the biodiversity to the environment and community in a two-way interactive sharing session. The webinar conducted via zoom meeting attended by 49 from various backgrounds; members of FOKRB, public and government agencies.
7. On 24th April 2021, a sharing session titled Perkongsian Komuniti dalam Usaha Pemuliharaan Bumi was conducted in conjunction of Earth Day 2021. The sharing session was moderated by Dr Kalithasan and panel from Kebun Komuniti AU2 Tmn Keramat (Tn Hj Mohd Halim) and Friends of Sungai Klang Mid Valley River Three (Ms Syuen Toh). Both panelist shared their experience in restoring an abandoned area in their area into a lush community garden as it is now. The sharing session aired via FoKRB Facebook had 569 outreach and 68 engagements whereas 23 participated through the zoom.
8. On 26th June 2021, a talk and workshop titled Lebah & Sungai Saling Melengkapi was conducted with the support of external speakers from My Bee Saviour Association (Dr. Mohd Norowi Hamid , Chairman, of My Bee Saviour Association, Dr. Noraini Bahari , Lecturer in Department Of Built Environment Studies And Technology, UITM and also member of My Bee Saviour Association and En.Izatul Lail bin Mohd Yasar, Secretary of the My Bee Saviour Association). The sharing session via the Facebook live and zoom platform with total of 180 participants in Zoom alone, 529 views and 34 sharing.
9. Six (6) sessions of zoom webinar training on social media workshop has been planned and is at the preparation stage. This targeted and specific training will be conducted from July 2021 to September 2021 for selected FokRB members. The session will cover: i) Introduction to social media including Facebook page/group auditing, ii) content planning for facebook group focused on how to draft captions and - best practices for pictures or video, iii) community management and engagement through Facebook groups, iv) contest and campaign planning on Facebook groups and v) on how to build own Facebook group awareness.
