SEVEN states in Malaysia have gazetted 100% of their forests as water catchment areas, says Environment and Water Minister Datuk Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man.

These states are Kedah, Melaka, Negri Sembilan, Pahang, Perlis, Selangor and Terengganu.

Tuan Ibrahim added that Kelantan comes close to fully gazettimg its forests at 99.2% while both Perak and Johor have only gazetted 54.12% and 9.47% of the forests respectively.

Penang is the only state in the Peninsulas that has yet to gazette its forests as water catchment areas, he said.

The state has proposed 3,398.94 hectares of its forest areas as water catchment areas.

He was responding to a query by Chow Kon Yeow (Pakatan Harapan-Tanjong) on the action and plans to preserve the Ulu Muda catchment area including to prevent pollution incidents in Sungai Muda.

Regarding the concern on the Ulu Muda catchment area, Tuan Ibrahim said the government will hold talks with the Kedah and Penang governments to resolve the issue involving rare earth elements (REE) mining near the river.
