STATION LAKE RANGER

Lake Ecosystem Zones

The main lake functions as a central collection point for water flowing in from the surrounding catchment and run- off, allowing visitors to observe how an entire lake ecosystem operates. It also serves as a learning area for the LAKE Ranger Education Programme.

Lake monitoring can be done using three (3) monitoring methods. These are Physical Monitoring, Chemical Monitoring and Biological Monitoring. Each method gives an index that is used to calculate the LAKE Ranger Index, which represents the health of the lake.

Physical Monitoring uses your senses to observe the physical characteristics of the lake as a guide to indicate its health. Chemical Monitoring uses Water Quality Test Kits containing tools and chemicals to assess and analyse the lake’s water quality at that point in time. Biological Monitoring checks for the presence of macroinvertebrates and any other aquatic animals, as well as vegetation where their presence indicates the quality of the lake ecosystem.
